What is Big Data?

Big data is everywhere. What is big data and how does it differ to “ordinary” data?

Every action you take leaves behind data online and offline. Since the beginning of time, humans have left informational footprints. This includes the original tallies used by ancient civilizations to track inventories, and the first census in 3800 BCE. Digitalization has made it easier than ever before to capture all data types.

What is Big Data?

John Mashey, a computer scientist who invented the term “big data” in the 1990s, is believed to be the inventor. The concept gained momentum in 2000s. It is due to many factors, such as the Internet of Things’ birth, our love of smart, connected devices, and widespread use of social networks. Every day we are creating massive amounts of data, and it’s happening very quickly. This is big data. Large amounts of data can be processed using traditional methods, but they are often too complicated and take too long.

But what size is “bigdata?” What does it mean when we say “fast”? Douglas Laney, a Gartner data analyst, created the three Vs for big-data in 2001. These are Volume, Velocity, and Variety. These characteristics allow you to differentiate big data from regular data.

What are the Three Vs of Big Data?

  • Volume: The volume of big data is huge and growing constantly. At the beginning of 2020, there were 44 zettabytes (or approximately 44 gigabytes), of digital data. One zettabyte is roughly equivalent to a trillion gigabytes. In 2025, 463 exabytes of data will be created every 24 hours. One billion gigabytes equals one exabyte. Big data refers to huge volumes that are almost unintelligible.
  • Velocity: Businesses are literally drowned by data because of our ever-connected world. Everyone who uses the internet, surfs the internet or connects via social media generates their own stream. Businesses should capture and make use of this data. The speed at which big data is generated simply refers to the velocity of big data.
  • There are many types of big data. It comes from many sources. This is what makes big data so complex. Big data can come in many forms: video, text, image, real-time data, and even audio data. This data also requires different analysis and processing. We’ll be discussing where big data comes from and the types of big data available in sections two and three.

What is Data Cleaning and Why Is It Important for Big Data?

Because of the increasing volume of structured and unstructured information gathered from multiple sources, big data can be complex. Data scientists cannot make sense of data unless it is converted to a single format.

Baltimore MD

Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland. It is also the fourth-most populous Mid-Atlantic city. In 2020, it was the 30th-most populous US city with 585,708 residents. Baltimore was declared an independent city by The Constitution of Maryland in 1851. It is today the largest independent city in America. The Baltimore metropolitan area had a population of 2,838,327 as of 2021. This makes it the 20th-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Baltimore is about 40 miles (64km) north of Washington, D. C., making the city a major in the Washington-Baltimore combined statistic area (CSA), which is the third-largest CSA of the country with an estimated population of 9,946,526 in 2021.

History

Baltimore was inhabited by Native Americans at least since the 10th century BC when Paleo-Indians arrived in the area. Baltimore has been home to one Paleo-Indian site, as well as several Archaic and Woodland period archaeological sites. Fourteen of these are from the Late Woodland period. A number of Woodland period Native American artifacts from the Woodland period were discovered in Herring Run Park, northeast Baltimore, in December 2021. They date back between 5,000 and 9,000 years. This discovery came after a period of dormancy that had been evident in Baltimore City’s archaeological finds since the 1980s. The Late Woodland period saw the Potomac Creek archaeological complex, which was found in the region from Baltimore to present-day Virginia’s Rappahannock River.

Climate

Baltimore is classified as a humid subtropical climate according to the Koppen climate classification. It has long, hot summers and cool winters. There is also a peak in annual precipitation during summer. Baltimore is located in USDA plant hardiness zones 8a and 7b. The summers are usually warm with occasional thunderstorms in the late afternoon. July is the warmest month with a mean temperature 80.3 degrees F (26.8 degrees Celsius). Winters can be cold or mild, but they also vary with occasional snowfall. January’s average daily temperature is 35.8 degrees (2.1 degrees Celsius), although temperatures can reach 50 degrees (10 degC) fairly often. Arctic air mass impacts the area, so temperatures can drop to 20 degrees (-7 degC).

Demographics

Stephanie Rawlings Blake, then-Mayor of Baltimore, stated that her primary goal was to increase its population. She did this by improving city services to decrease the number people leaving and passing legislation to protect immigrants’ rights in order to encourage growth. Baltimore is often referred to as a sanctuary town. Jack Young, the then-Mayor of Baltimore, stated that Baltimore would not support ICE agents in immigration raids.

Transportation

Baltimore has a higher than average percentage of households that don’t have a car. The national average was 8.7 percent. In 2015, 30.7 per cent of Baltimore households did not have a car. This dropped slightly to 28.9 per cent in 2016. In 2016, the national average was 8.7 %. In 2016, Baltimore had an average of 1.65 cars per household, compared with a national average average of 1.8.

The city was once a major industrial center with a strong economic base that included steel processing, shipping and auto manufacturing (General Motors Baltimore Assembly) and transportation. However, it experienced deindustrialization which resulted in the loss of thousands of low-skilled, high-wage jobs. The city’s 31% job share is now based on a low-wage, service-oriented economy. Baltimore was the U.S.’s leading producer of straw hats and rye whiskey around the turn of 20th century. It was also a leader in the refining crude oil brought from Pennsylvania via a pipeline.
