History

Transportation
Downtown Boston’s streets developed organically. They do not form a planned grid like those in the South End, East Boston, South Boston and South Boston. Boston is the eastern terminus for I-90 in Massachusetts, which runs along the Massachusetts Turnpike. The elevated section of the Central Artery that carried the majority of through traffic in Boston was removed during the Big Dig. It was substantially finished in 2006. Both the former and the current Central Artery are connected to I-93, which is the main north-south artery of the city.
