Columbia’s original plan called for a minibus network connecting village centers along a separate right-of-way, which allowed for denser development. Although the routes were never constructed, the Columbia Association operated minibuses under the name “ColumBus”. They were eventually taken over and operated by Howard County. Six Howard Transit bus routes connected Columbia with neighboring areas, such as Ellicott city and BWI Airport. They were then replaced by the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland in 2014. Many Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), routes offer access to Washington and Baltimore.
