Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska, and Lancaster County’s county seat. It covers 100.4 sq. miles (2660.035 km2) and has a population of 292,657 as of 2021. It is Nebraska’s 2nd-most populous and the 73rd largest in the United States.

History

Lincoln, originally a village called Lancaster, was established in 1856. It became the county seat in newly formed Lancaster County in 1859. The site of the village is on Salt Creek’s east bank. Salt was the reason that attracted the first settlers to the area. J. Sterling Morton established his salt mines at Kansas. Salt in the village was no more a viable commodity. Salt Creek was settled by Captain W. T. Donovan (a former steamer captain) and his family in 1856. The village settlers formed a county in 1859. The county was created by a caucus. Donovan was part of the committee that selected Lancaster as its seat. The county was named Lancaster. The 1862 Homestead Act was passed and homesteaders started to settle in the county. August 6, 1864 was the date of the first plat.

Climate

Lincoln is located in the Great Plains, far from any mountains or large bodies water. Lincoln enjoys a highly variable continental climate with four seasons. Summers are hot and winters are cold. Since winter is not very wet, the majority of precipitation occurs in the warmer months when thunderstorms roll in and often produce tornadoes. Average snowfall is 26.0 inches (66cm) per season, but seasonal accumulations have varied from 7.2cm (18cm) in 1967-1968 up to 55.5cm (141cm) in 2018-192019. Although snow tends to fall in small amounts, blizzards can occur. An average 38 days are covered by snow with a depth of 1 inch (2.5 cm) or greater. The window for freezing temperatures runs from October 7 to April 25, which allows for a growing season of 164 day.

Demographics

The city was home to 291,082 residents as of 2020. The population density was 2,938.74 people per square mile (1.134.7/km2). The city’s racial makeup included 84.9% White, 4.4% African American and 0.7% Native American. It also contained 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.6% Asian, 4.6% Asian, and 3.9% from more than one race. 7.6% of the population was Hispanic and Latino.

Transportation

Lincoln is connected to Interstate 80 via seven interchanges. This connects the city with San Francisco in California and Teaneck, New Jersey, in the New York City Metropolitan area in the East. The Lincoln area is also served by Interstate 180, U.S. Route 6, U. S. Highway 34 and U. S. Highway 77, as well as nearby Nebraska Highway 79. Nebraska Highway 2’s eastern section is the primary trucking route connecting the Kansas City metropolitan region (Interstate 29), to Lincoln’s I-80 corridor.
