History

Bethesda is in an area that was once inhabited by the Nacotchtank and Piscataway tribes during European colonization. Henry Fleet, a fur trader, was the first European to visit this area. He reached it by sailing upriver from the Potomac River. From 1623 to 1627, he stayed with the Piscataway Tribe as either a guest or a prisoner (historical accounts vary). Fleet was eventually able to secure funding for another expedition. He later received proprietary rights to 2,000 acres in the colony’s nascent colony. He also became a member the Maryland colonial legislature. In 1694, Maryland’s division of Rangers was created to protect the frontier from raids by the Senecas as well as the Susquehannock.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, the CDP had 55,277 residents, 23,659 households and 14,455 families. The population density was 4,205.8 people per square mile (1.623.9/km2). The CDP’s racial composition was 85.86% white, 2.67% Black, African American, 0.17% Native American and 7.92% Asian. Transportation

Washington Metro’s Red Line serves two main locations in Bethesda. They are the downtown area near the Bethesda Station and the area close to the National Institutes of Health, Walter Reed Medical Center and the Medical Center station. Maryland Transit Administration’s Purple Line will connect Bethesda with Silver Spring, Maryland University, College Park, New Carrollton, and other destinations. The Purple Line will enable riders to travel between the Red, Green and Orange lines of Washington Metro’s transportation system as well as MARC and Amtrak trains without having to travel into central Washington.
