NW Database Services – Our History

Northwest Database was established early in 1986 by the founder and owner, Geoffrey Hollander, in his spare bedroom in Albuquerque, NM. The infant business became Mail Pouch, focusing on assisting businesses such as Tema of Copenhagen and Mauldin furniture with their data organization and monthly mailing lists. The business maintained a comprehensive city-wide list of residences and businesses for numerous customers, printers, and mailing houses. While working in the mailing industry, the business model grew to include data cleaning and de-duping (removing duplicate records from lists). With the relocation to the Pacific Northwest, the company name was changed to NW Database Services.

Geoffrey Hollander began his foray into the computer world in the early 1980s. While managing a sales team for Excalibur Technologies, he learned how to use their application – an early artificial intelligence (AI) database application for PCs. The company grew and evolved into Savvy Corporation, where Geoff designed the order department’s monthly mailing fulfillment. In mailing, the degree of prediction and response, measured in small percentages 2%-4%, can be an unsettling reality in the marketing environment. Mailing has simple rules; follow the rules and be profitable; ignore them, and you will not be successful. These small margins for success require a meticulous focus on details to improve outcome.

By the late eighties, more and more businesses were implementing in-house technology and using their PCs for data collection and storage. With a change of venue and name change, NW Database Services in SW Washington, became more focused on improving the quality of data in companies’ mailing lists. With a short stay in Santa Barbara 1989-1994, the company served non-profit organizations such as, St Vincent’s, the Santa Barbara Rehab Center, and Cottage Hospital. The company owner maintained a relationship with the National Society for Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE). While in Santa Barbara, Geoff was the founder of the Santa Barbara Postal Customer Council and its president for three years. NW Database has collaborated with such well-known companies as Group 1, Pitney Bowes, IBM, Arc Tangent, AccuMail, PIP Printing, Oregon Data, Optisource, DeWils Cabinets, La-Z-Boy Furniture, Journal Graphics, Good Will of Oregon and Google.

Geoff wrote a monthly column for the industry paper, Mailers’ Review, and software reviews for Easy Database, Infoworld, Windows Magazine, OS2 Professional, OS2 Magazine, Home Office Computing, PC Magazine, Small Business Opportunities, and others.

Over the years, database services have changed. Once data collection, data entry, and list maintenance were the most crucial aspects of business information needs, but the more data collected, the greater the need for standardization and cleanup and more insightful maintenance policies. The first rule of data remains, “Garbage in; Garbage out.”
