Time Series Analysis Models, and Techniques

Time series analysis can be performed using many models and techniques. Let’s now look at three of the most popular models.

Box-Jenkins Arima Models

The Box-Jenkins ARIMA model is univariate analysis that can be used to understand one time-dependent variable such as student performance over a time period, temperature over a time, etc. ARIMA models can also be used to predict future data points for those single, time dependent variables.

Data analysts need to account for seasonalities and other differences in the past data points in order to properly use ARIMA models. ARIMA models have terms that allow data analysts to account seasonal differences, moving averages and other terms within them so they can compensate.

Box-Jenkins Multivariate Models

Multivariate Box-Jenkins models can be used to analyze more than one time-dependent variable. Data analysts can use this method to examine the changes in multiple variables over time, and possibly determine how they influence each other’s development.

Temperature and humidity in meteorology is a great example. Multivariate models may be used by meteorologists to determine the impact of temperature on humidity in local climates, or vice versa. They can observe how these effects change with the seasons, and how time affects their interactions.

Holt-Winters Method

The Holt-Winters technique is an efficient time series analysis method that uses exponential smoothing. The Holt-Winters technique helps data analysts forecast future events or outcomes. This method takes into account seasonality and cyclic effects to improve data forecast accuracy.

Final Thoughts

Time series analysis is an essential part of data analytics. It can be used to predict future events and make business decisions. Data analysts must be able to perform time series analysis in order to better serve clients. This will allow them to see how data points change over time, rather than simply looking at the graph’s beginning and ending points.

Climate

Kansas City is located in the Midwestern United States near the geographical center of the country at the confluence between the Missouri and Kansas Rivers.
