What is a Relational Database Base?

History

New Orleans was founded in 1718 by French colonists. It was the former capital of French Louisiana. The city became part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. New Orleans was the third-most populous American city, with a population of approximately 32,000 people in 1840. It was also the largest American South city from the Antebellum period to after World War II. Because of its low elevation, high rainfall, poor natural drainage and proximity to many water bodies, the city has been historically very vulnerable to flooding. The summer months (June to August) have high dewpoints, with them ranging between 71.1 and 73.4 degF (21.7 – 23.0 degC).

Demographics

The city’s population grew by 12% between 2010 and 2014 census estimates. This is in addition to the average increase of over 10,000 residents each year since the official decennial census. The 2020 United States Census showed that there were 383,997 residents, 151,753 families, and 69.370 households in the city. The population of New Orleans grew steadily to 627,525, prior to 1960.

Transportation

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed transit service. New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA), was faster to restore streetcar service to service. Bus service had been restored to only 35% of its pre-Katrina level as recently as 2013. Streetcars were seen arriving on average once every seventeen minutes during the same period as buses, which was compared to bus frequency of once every thirty-eight minute. This same priority was also demonstrated by RTA’s spending. It increased the percentage of its budget that is dedicated to streetcars to over three times its pre-Katrina budget. Only 51% of streetcar and bus service was restored by the end 2017 – this includes both streetcars and buses.
