Chattanooga, Tennessee is the county seat and city of Hamilton County. It is located along the Tennessee River, which borders Georgia. On its western end, it extends into Marion County.
History
Native Americans were the first to settle in Chattanooga. Sites dating back to the Upper Paleolithic period (c. 10,000 BCE) show continuous human occupation through the Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian/Muskogean/Yuchi (900-1714 CE), and Cherokee (1776-1838) periods. The Chickamauga Mound is located near the Chickamauga Creek mouth and is the oldest visible art (c.750 CE).
Climate
Chattanooga has a humid subtropical four-season climate, as does much of Tennessee. Winter days are typically mild. However, most years have at minimum one day (average 3.2), where the temperature is below freezing. The amount of snowfall varies greatly from one year to the next.
