History

The Watauga Agreement, a 1772 frontier agreement generally considered to be the first constitution west of the Appalachian Mountains, is the root of Tennessee. Its name comes from Tanasi, a Cherokee settlement in the eastern portion of the state that existed prior to the arrival of European Americans.

The state experienced a natural increase in population of 143,253 between 2010 and 2019. This includes 744,274 deaths and 601,021 births, as well as an increase due to net migration of 338.428 people into the state. The net result of immigration from the U.S. was a net gain of 79,086, while the net effect of migration within the country was a net gain of 259,342. Tennessee’s population center is located in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County.
