South Bend, Indiana is the county seat for St. Joseph County in Indiana. It’s located on the St. Joseph River at its southernmost bend. This river gives it its name. The city was home to 103,453 people, making it the fourth-largest in Indiana at the 2020 census. In 2020, the metropolitan area had 324,501 residents, while its combined statistical area was 812,199. It is situated just south of Indiana’s border to Michigan.
Fur traders established trading posts in the region and were the first permanent white settlers to South Bend. Pierre Frieschutz Navarre, who represented the American Fur Company (AFC), John Jacob Astor, arrived in 1820. He settled in the vicinity of South Bend’s current downtown.

Vincent H. Bendix, an industrialist and entrepreneur, chose South Bend to build his first manufacturing facility for automotive parts in 1923. South Bend was located on the railroad line between Chicago and Detroit which were the two major automotive manufacturing centers in the United States at that time. The Bendix corporation eventually built a massive manufacturing facility on the South Bend acreage. It was served by major railroads and a large shipping port.
