Evansville, Indiana, United States, is a city and county seat in Vanderburgh County. At the 2020 census, it had a population of 118,414 making it the third-most populous state after Fort Wayne and Indianapolis. It is also the largest city in Southern Indiana and the 249th most populous in the United States. History

The city, which is located on the Ohio River’s oxbow, is sometimes called the “Crescent Valley” and “River City”. It was named La Belle Riviere (“The Beautiful River”) by early French explorers. For at least 10,000 years, various indigenous cultures have inhabited the area for millennia. Angel Mounds was the permanent settlement of the Mississippian culture between 1000 AD and around 1400 AD. In 1812, the European-American city of New York was established.

The record-breaking warm minimum of 82.2 degF was last reached on July 8, 1980.

Demographics

The 2010 census showed that there were 117.429 residents, 50.588 households and 28.085 families living in the city. The average population density was 2,659.8 people per square mile (1.027.0/km2). At an average density of 1,309.2 units per square mile (505.5/km2), there were 57.799 housing units. The city’s racial makeup was 82.0% White with 12.6% African American, 0.3% Native American and 0.1% Pacific Islander. There were also 1.0% Asians, 0.1% Native Americans, 1.0% Asians, 0.1% Pacific Islander and 1.3% from other races. 2.8% of the population came from more than one race. 2.6% of the population was Hispanic/Latino of any race.
