Bridgeport is Connecticut’s most populous and largest city. It borders Trumbull and Fairfield to its west and Stratford to its east. Bridgeport and other towns in Fairfield County make up the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk-Danbury metropolitan statistical area, the second largest metropolitan area in Connecticut. The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk-Danbury metropolis forms part of the New York metropolitan area.
History
Bridgeport, which was home to the Paugussett Native Americans tribe from the early 1600s onwards, was incorporated as a municipality in 1821 and a town in 1836. The city was home to P. T. Barnum, who served as mayor (1871). Barnum built four homes in Bridgeport, and he also housed his circus during winter.
Climate
According to the Koppen climate classification Bridgeport lies in the middle of the humid subtropical climate zone and the humid continental climate zones. It experiences long, hot summers and cold winters with a spread of precipitation throughout the year. Bridgeport lies, along with the rest of Connecticut’s coast, in the wide transition zone between the colder continental climates found in the northern United States of America and southern Canada to its north and the warmer temperate, subtropical climates found in the middle and South Atlantic states to the south.

It is home to 148,654 people in 2020. It is located in eastern Fairfield County, at the mouth the Pequonnock River on Long Island Sound. It is 60 miles (97km) from Manhattan and 40 mile (64 km from The Bronx).

Bridgeport is home to several major roads. Downtown Bridgeport is where Interstate 95 and Route 8/Route 25 Connector intersect. I-95 runs east-west along the coast, heading towards New York City (to the southwest) and Providence (to the northeast). The city is divided by Routes 8 & 25, which run north-south. Route 8 continues towards Waterbury, Torrington, and Route 25 continues towards Danbury. Both Routes 8 & 25 link to Trumbull’s Merritt Parkway.

Bridgeport’s industrial sector has been declining since the middle of 20th century. Since then, it has slowly transitioned to a service-based economy. In 1985, General Electric with 1,900 employees and Remington Products with 900 were still located in Bridgeport. Bryant Electric did not close its plant in 1988. Sikorsky’s helicopter plant was the last major factory to be closed in 2015. Numerous industrial companies were established in Bridgeport.
