Boise, the capital and largest city in the U.S. state of Idaho, is also the county seat for Ada County. The city was home to 235,684 residents as of 2020. It is located on the Boise River, in southwestern Idaho. It is 41 miles (66km) east of Oregon’s border and 110 miles (175 km) north of Nevada’s border. The elevation of the downtown area is 2,704 feet (824m) above sea level.
Boise Valley Shoshone, Bannock and other tribes inhabited the Boise Valley valley. This was part of “Snake Country.” According to the City of Boise’s History of Boise report, they gathered each year in the valley to trade rendezvous with other tribes and to catch salmon in Boise River runs to sustain them year-round. They spent winters in the valley, where the climate was warmer, and used the hot springs to bathe and heal. Castle Rock, also known as Eagle Rock by tribes, is a sacred place.
Boise is home to a semi-arid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Boise’s major Interstate is I-84. It connects Boise to Portland, Oregon and Salt Lake City (Utah). Residents in Boise are also served by Interstate 184, locally known as “The Connector”, a freeway that connects I-84 to the downtown Boise area. It is nearly 5 miles (8 km) long. Highway 55 extends northeast. The city has a network bike paths such as the Boise River Greenbelt that run through the entire area. Boise is the seventh most popular US city for bicycle commuters, with 3.9% of commuters using bikes to get to work.
Downtown Boise is home to many small businesses as well as a few high-rises. There are many shops and restaurants in the area. 8th Street is centrally located and has a pedestrian zone that includes sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and shops. There are many restaurants, bars, boutiques, and shops in the neighborhood. This area is home to the Basque Block which displays Boise’s Basque heritage. Downtown Boise is home to the Idaho State Capitol, the classic Egyptian Theatre at the corner of Capitol Boulevard & Main Street, as well as the Boise Art Museum and Capitol right in front of Julia Davis Park and Zoo Boise.
