Bloomington, Minnesota is a suburb located in Hennepin County. It’s 10 miles (16km) south of Minneapolis, at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Minnesota River. The city had a population of 89,987 at the 2020 census. This makes it Minnesota’s fourth largest city.

History

Bloomington was created as a post-World War II suburb that was connected to Minneapolis’s urban street grid. It is served by two major freeways, Interstate 35W or Interstate 494. The I-494 corridor is the main route for large-scale commercial development. Bloomington has a large city park system with more than 1,000 square feet (93m2) per capita. It also hosts Hyland Lake Park Reserve in West Bloomington and Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, both in the Southeast.

The city had 82,893 residents, 35,905 households and 21,618 families as of 2010. 2,390.2 people per square mile (922.9/km2) was the population density. The average housing unit density was 1,085.4/square mile (419.1/km2). There were 37 641 housing units. The city’s racial composition was 79.7% White with 7.2% African American, 0.4% Native American and 5.9% Asian. It had an average density of 1,085.4 per square mile (419.1/km2). 6.8% of the population was Hispanic/Latino of any race. East Bloomington has a significantly higher diversity than West Bloomington.

Transportation

The Metro Blue Line is a light rail line that runs between downtown Minneapolis and the Mall of America in Bloomington. The Metro Red Line is a bus route that runs between Apple Valley, Minnesota and the Mall of America in Bloomington. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport also serves Bloomington. The Metro Orange Line, which runs from Burnsville, Minnesota to downtown Minneapolis, was also completed construction in 2021. It travels through Bloomington via Interstate 35W.
