City of Overland Park KS Information
Overland Park, Kansas is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas. It is the second-most populous Kansas city. It is the largest suburb in Kansas City, Missouri and one of the four major cities of the Kansas City metropolitan region.  The city’s population was 197,238 at the 2020 census.
Overland Park, with a population 28055, was officially incorporated as a city of first class on May 20, 1960. The population nearly quadrupled in 30 years, from 111,790 people in 1960 to 173,250 by the 2010 census. After passing Kansas City in the 2000s, Overland Park was officially named the second-largest city in Kansas.
Overland Park is located in the transition zone between North America’s humid subtropical climate zone and humid continental climate zones. It experiences hot, humid summers and dry winters.
The 2010 United States Census showed that the city had 173,372 residents, 71,443 families, and 45,516 households. The population density was 2,316.5 people per square mile (894.4/km2). The average housing unit density was 1,019.2/square mile (393.5/km2). The city’s racial makeup was 84.4% White with 4.3% African American and 0.3% American Indian. There were 76,280 housing units at an average density of 1,019.2 per square mile (393.5/km2). 6.3% of the population was Hispanics or Latinos of any race.
Interstate 435, Kansas City’s beltway and U.S. Route 50 both run east-west through central Overland Park. Interstate 35 runs northeast to southwest through the city’s northern and western fringes. U.S. Route 56, U.S. Route 169 are parallel to I-35 in the city’s northern fringe. They then split off to the east at Shawnee Mission Parkway interchange 226, which runs east-west through northern Overland Park. The U.S. Route 69 runs north-south through the City, merging with U.S. 56 and U.S. 169 at the interchange 225 just northwest. U.S. 69 splits to the east with U.S. 56 and U.S. 169, Shawnee Mission Parkway. Then it turns north as Metcalf Avenue. U.S. 69 merges with I-35 in northern Overland Park. Metcalf Avenue continues to the north as Interstate 635.
Most of the local economy is made up of services. The city’s five biggest industries are health care, retail trade and professional and technical services. Finance and insurance are also important. The Overland Park Xchange building is also located in the city. It has 735,000 square foot of office space and is the third largest office building within the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
