History

Jefferson City was selected as the location for a state prison. The Missouri State Penitentiary was established in 1836. Multiple infamous Americans were held in this prison, including Sonny Liston (ex-heavyweight champion), James Earl Ray assassin, and Pretty Boy Floyd, a bank robber.
