Information About Data Cleaning And Data Services

Why Is Data Cleansing So Important?

Data analysts can receive data from many sources. These data may come in many formats and, more often than you think, contain “dirty” information. These data won’t be available for analysis immediately, so it’s important to clean them up first.

What Is Dirty Data?

Dirty data is any data that needs to be modified or altered in order to be analysed. There are two types of dirty data. Incomplete data, which is a spreadsheet with missing values. These data would be useless for your analysis. If you wish to examine the relationship between these variables, data for customer age and monthly purchase is necessary. If you don’t know the customer’s ages, it’s possible to deal with incomplete data. Duplicate data refers to records that appear twice in the same database or more than once. This can occur when data is merged from different sources or databases. Inconsistent or inaccurate data – Data that has been out of date, or is prone to structural errors such as typos, inconsistency capitalization, or irregular naming conventions. Let’s suppose you have a set of student test scores. Some students are classified as Pass or Fail while others are classified as P or F. However, the naming convention can make it difficult to differentiate between them. It is important to know what kind of dirty data you have so that you can decide how to clean it. Spend some time reviewing the data you have collected or received to determine where to focus your cleaning efforts.

Data Cleaning: Garbage in and Garbage Out

You might have heard the phrase “Garbage In and Garbage Out”, also known as GIGO. GIGO, a term that comes from computer science, basically means that if you have flawed data, you will get flawed results. Data analytics requires high-quality, clean data to perform meaningful and reliable analyses. If you don’t clean your data, it’s impossible to analyse them. If you do your data cleaning correctly, you will be able create something reliable, lasting, and strong. Your analysis will quickly fall apart if you don’t do it right or skip it altogether. 60% of data experts spend their time cleaning data. Not only is it a bad idea, but it can also result in costly mistakes over the long-term. When you present data analysis recommendations and draw conclusions, it is important to feel confident. Only if your data is properly cleaned can this be achieved.

Northwest Database Services has 34+ years experience with all types of data services, including mail presorts, NCOA, and data deduplication. If your database systems are not returning poor data, it is definitely time for you to consult with a data services specialist. We have experience with large and small data sets. Often, data requires extensive manipulation to remove corrupt data and restore the database to proper functionality. Call us at (360)841-8168 for a consultation and get the process of data cleaning started as soon as possible.
